Hazelwood Mine Fire Inquiry - Affirmations and Recommendations update

22 Jul 2015

Fire preparedness and rehabilitation works within the Hazelwood mine continue following the Hazelwood Mine Fire Inquiry.

Work is nearing completion on the 17 affirmations and six recommendations handed down by the Board of Inquiry last September. One affirmation and two recommendations remain in progress, with all commitments solely with GDF SUEZ complete.

Those which remain in progress relate to activities involving other parties such as the Victorian WorkCover Authority. Progress continues on the yet to be completed items, with recommendation 15 and 16 involving several elements.

Agreed physical works being rehabilitation, vegetation clearing and pipework enhancements were all completed during 2014. Additionally we have proactively gone beyond the requirements of the affirmations and recommendations in the areas of:

1. Fire preparedness on severe fire danger days
2. Installation of additional fire pipework
3. Portable Forward Looking Infra-Red (FLIR) monitors based in the mine

It is anticipated the balance of GDF SUEZ Hazelwood Mine Fire Inquiry affirmations and recommendations will be completed by the end of the year.
