ENGIE recognises its responsibilities and the important role it plays in protecting the environment today and helping to ensure a sustainable future. It has a strict and continually updated global environmental policy. Environmental performance is reviewed alongside safety, financial and engineering performance.

Wherever ENGIE operates in the world, it nurtures a culture within its workforce that empowers employees to carry out their environmental responsibilities effectively.

The company is also committed to tree planting programs, land rehabilitation and the enhancement of wetlands and nature reserves.

ENGIE’s largest asset in Australia, Loy Yang B power station, is committed to generating a reliable source of electricity in a safe, socially and environmentally responsible way.

The power station has completed several significant environmental improvement programs and conducted regular environmental audits as part of workplace standards.

Mining at the Hazelwood Mine has now ceased, and preparations are under way for decommissioning and rehabilitation of the mine.

Rehabilitation is the process of returning the land to as natural state as possible, where topographical features are consistent with existing surrounding land and where ecosystems are protected and nurtured. It is an important and ongoing process that is consistent with our regulatory responsibilities as a miner.

ENGIE operates two of Australia’s most efficient and environmentally friendly power stations at Kwinana in Western Australia and Pelican Point in South Australia.

Both are cogeneration plants where heat recovery steam generators optimise the heat from the exhaust of natural gas driven turbines. They also have comprehensive systems in place to ensure compliance with relevant government environmental protection agencies.

The company’s Canunda wind farm in South Australia represents a move towards power generated from sustainable resources. At maximum capacity the turbines generate 46MW of electricity, which equates to a greenhouse gas reduction of 108,799 tonnes of CO2 per year.

ENGIE also invests in local community environmental programs including significant tree planting projects and rehabilitation of wetlands. Following are a couple of examples of how the company supports local initiatives:

As part of the Company’s commitment to the environment, Loy Yang B operates a corporate Landcare program on behalf of ENGIE in the Gippsland area including Phillip Island, Powlett, Churchill and Maffra.

The Landcare program has been responsible for the planting of more than 1.5 million native trees, shrubs and grasses. It has also been used to trial emerging techniques such as direct seeding and carbon sequestration calculation methods.

The Traralgon Railway Reservoir Conservation Reserve (TRRCR) is a wetlands development centred on historic local land.

Loy Yang B in conjunction with the reserve’s friends group has committed funding to an on-going program of activities focused on re-establishing the reservoir’s unique native fauna and flora.

Part of this project is to expand the wetlands area to provide increased habitat for the numerous aquatic and bird species that inhabit the reserve.
