ENGIE and Origin Energy have renewed a gas tolling agreement for ENGIE’s Pelican Point power station from July 1, 2020, providing much-needed fuel security to the plant for four years and ensuring that its full capacity remains available to South Australian customers. ENGIE Australia & New Zealand Chief Executive Officer, Augustin Honorat said that Pelican Point was perfectly suited to meet the electricity demand profile in SA and to back up the State’s installed renewable generation plant. “Since 2017, ENGIE has invested $75 million in upgrades to a facility that was already one of the most efficient in the market. This agreement ensures that we can continue to make all of Pelican Point’s 497MW capacity available when it’s needed over the medium term,” said Mr Honorat. “Gas-fired generation is an important part of our energy transition as it is a reliable complement to renewables. We will continue to work with industry and government to explore opportunities for our South Australian gas assets.” In 2017, Origin and ENGIE announced a three-year agreement for Origin to supply gas to ENGIE’s second Pelican Point unit and access 240 megawatts of electricity production. The new arrangement, which runs to June 30, 2024, will see Origin continue to pay charges and supply gas to ENGIE in order to support electricity generation at one of Pelican Point’s two units.
