New Electric Vehicle smart charging trial project launched in South Australia

(Adelaide, Australia - July 4, 2023) JET Charge, the leading provider of electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure and technologies in Australia, has collaborated with ENGIE, Rocland Estate and the South Australian (SA) Government to provide EV charging on the Rocland EV Smart Charging Trials project.

The initiative aims to enhance EV charging infrastructure between Adelaide and one of the most popular travel destinations in SA – the Gateway to the Riverland and the townships of Berri and Renmark.

The site is equipped with advanced charging equipment, including Tritium PKM150 and Tritium TRM75 DC Chargers, offering 10 charging ports in total.

To ensure efficient and optimal utilisation of the EV charging stations, JET Charge will implement its CORE energy management system. CORE enables dynamic load management allowing for seamless charging experiences and effective distribution of power across the charging infrastructure.

Tim Washington, CEO of JET Charge, commented “the Rocland project will serve as a trial for the future of public smart charging, and will showcase a charging model that aligns grid and consumer needs.” During the trial, peak pricing and output levels will be adjusted to align with the timing of renewable energy resources within the state. Changes to time-of-use pricing and dynamic output will also be implemented to study consumer behavior and to evaluate the impact of these modifications. Washington continues “we need to ensure that public charging can be responsive to periods of high renewables penetration on the grid, and to align pricing with low grid costs. This trial will provide vital data on that journey”.

ENGIE ANZ Director of Green Mobility, Greg Schumann, says the Rocland Estate facility is an example of the growing demand for “destination charging”.

“It’s important to put EV chargers in convenient locations where people want to go, be it a shopping centre, tourism destination or somewhere they visit as part of their daily routine. “By giving drivers access to EV charging stations utilising renewable energy, we’re demonstrating how easy it is to switch to electric transport and help lower emissions.”

JET Charge, ENGIE, and the South Australian Government are excited about the Rocland Estate project and its potential to pave the way for future advancements in EV charging infrastructure across the region. By facilitating convenient and reliable charging solutions, the collaboration will further promote the adoption of EVs and contribute to a sustainable transportation ecosystem in South Australia.
