Solar-powered EV charging infrastructure for Porsche

The Brief

Porsche’s ambition is to be the most sustainable premium sports car manufacturer globally, and this was marked by the launch of their all-electric Taycan Turbo S car in Australia. Porsche wanted to not only address the growing need for electric vehicle charging infrastructure, but also to substantially reduce their carbon footprint and energy costs. As part of its sustainability strategy, Porsche decided to install a large rooftop solar PV system on its Collingwood showroom which is also its Australian headquarters. ENGIE collaborated with Porsche by designing and constructing the solar system in time for the release of the new electric vehicle.

The Solution

To help Porsche achieve their green targets, ENGIE installed a 200kWp solar PV system, consisting of nearly 500 high-efficiency LG solar panels that cover 1000m2 of Porsche’s Melbourne rooftop.

Within a short span of less than three months and with minimal disruption to business operations, the system was up and running, providing instant returns to Porsche. The system is expected to produce 243.2 MWh per annum.

ENGIE took advantage of the multi-storey carpark to bring the PV panels on the roof, avoiding the use of a crane that would have significantly disrupted the site operations.

ENGIE is also working closely with Porsche to develop a customised display to showcase the performance of the solar PV system and help further promote Porsche’s range of electric and hybrid cars, ensuring a seamless integration into the existing audio-visual infrastructure.

The Benefit

This system will replace 26% of the site’s electrical consumption, significantly reducing its carbon footprint, but also providing savings with an estimated payback of less than six years. It will also assist to power the electric-vehicle chargers being installed on site.

Porsche can now generate additional revenue from selling large-scale generation certificates while providing income from excess solar power when exported back to the grid.

In addition, the solar PV system helps Porsche reduce their carbon footprint by about 248 tonnes CO2-e each year.

As electric vehicles and the necessary infrastructure required to power them become more and more common across the country, ENGIE is proud to be at the forefront of providing economically and environmentally friendly solutions that are not only relevant now, but will endure for years to come.
