Moving house: Your energy checklist
A simple checklist for new and existing ENGIE customers to prepare your meters, manage disconnection notices, and secure your supply transfer.
Your checklist for a stress-free gas and electricity move with ENGIE
Organising a move is complex, and the last thing you need is a hassle with utilities. This guide provides a comprehensive checklist to ensure your electricity and gas supply transfers smoothly to your new home.
To guarantee connection at your new home, arrange your service transfer at least three business days before your confirmed move date.
Step 1: Notify your energy provider(s)
At this initial stage, make sure you talk to both your current and future energy providers so the disconnection and reconnection of your supply runs smoothly.
Disconnection notice (Current home)
You must notify your current provider of your intended moving date to schedule a disconnection. Failing to do so can result in you being charged for energy consumption at the empty property after you’ve left.
Connection request (New home)
If you are moving to ENGIE, it’s time to finalise your plan. For both new and existing customers, the quickest way to request your service connection is through our Movers page.
Step 2: Prepare for connection
Two key steps are required at your new home to ensure a smooth, guaranteed connection.
Prepare access to your meter
We may need to read or access the gas and electricity meters, so we require clear and safe access to all meters on your property. This means the path to the meter is free of debris, plants, or locked gates, and you must notify us if any electrical or gas maintenance work is being performed at the property. This is a critical safety requirement.
Switch off your electricity meter
To help us transfer your electricity supply successfully, you must complete a simple switch-off procedure.
Connection procedure:
Before you move: Locate the main switch in your fuse box or switchboard at the property.
Action: Turn the main switch OFF before the scheduled connection time.
After the scheduled time: Once the scheduled time has passed, turn the main switch ON. Your electricity should now be connected.
The ENGIE Moving Home Energy Guarantee
ENGIE is committed to a stress-free connection. Our Moving Home Energy Guarantee provides a clear service commitment.
Our commitment: We guarantee your gas and/or electricity will be connected within three business days of your confirmed date. If we fail to connect you by this date (and conditions are met), your first bill will be credited with $500.
