Solar PV Systems: Benefits and Home Value

Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Systems convert sunlight into clean electricity, allowing you to
self-consume renewable power during the day.

    • Environmental Impact Reduction: Solar energy produces no direct greenhouse gas emissions, helping you live greener.
    • Property Value Enhancement: A high-quality solar PV system is a popular feature that can add significant market appeal to your home.
    • Grid Independence: You use your own generated power first, relying on the electricity grid only when your panels aren't producing.

Solar Feed-in Tariffs: Earning Credit for Excess Energy

Solar Feed-in Tariffs (FITs) are payments you receive for the unused energy your panels send back to the electricity grid. When your rooftop system generates more power than your home needs, we credit your electricity bill at a set rate per kilowatt-hour (kWh).

Solar feed-in tariff rates and eligibility criteria

For current standard solar feed-in tariff (FIT) rates and eligibility criteria in your specific state, refer to our solar FIT policy.

Financial Incentives: Government Rebates and Payback Periods

Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) act as a federal financial incentive to lower the upfront cost of your solar investment. Under the Australian Government’s Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme, eligible households can receive an upfront discount or sell certificates to recoup installation costs.

    • Installation Costs: A standard 5kWh solar system typically costs between $4,500 and $8,000 after STC rebates are applied.
    • Payback Timeframes: Most Australian households recoup their initial investment within 3 to 8 years, depending on sunlight hours and local electricity rates.
    • ROI Factors: Your return on investment is influenced by your "self-consumption" levels. Using appliances like the dishwasher or washing machine during peak sun hours helps you save faster.

Your Solar Journey: Three Steps to Powering Up

We've made the transition to solar as simple as possible - from choosing the right system to professional setup.

    • Request a Consultation: Share your energy needs with us, and we will connect you with our network of reputable, professional installers.
    • Customise Your System: Receive a tailored quote based on your roof orientation, shade levels, and household energy habits.
    • Professional Installation: Our partners manage the technical setup, typically taking only a few hours to get your home ready to harness the sun.

Energy Tracking: Monitoring Your Solar Performance

MyENGIE is our free service that draws real-time data from your smart meter to show you exactly how your solar is performing. If you have a smart meter and an email address, we’ll automatically sign you up so you can monitor your progress.

    • Usage Insights: See a breakdown of how many kilowatts you’ve exported to the grid and the credits you’ve earned.
    • Daily updates: We'll show you your key stats, like monthly average, highest spend this year, what you've spent so far this month and predicted next bill.
    • Smart Integration: Use these insights to change habits, such as running high-energy appliances when your solar production is at its peak.

    Solar FAQs: Making Renewables Simpler

Am I eligible to sign up for the ENGIE Solar energy plan?

Joining the ENGIE Solar plan is a simple process designed for households looking to get the most out of their rooftop investment. To ensure this plan is the right fit for your home, your solar system must meet specific size and capacity standards.

    • Inverter Capacity Limits: This plan is tailored for residential systems with an inverter size of 10kW or less.
    • New Installations: You are welcome to sign up if your system is currently being installed or is already active on your roof.
    • Credit Details: Any solar credits you earn are applied directly to your account (inclusive of GST) to help lower your bill, rather than being paid out as cash.

Need to Know: If your inverter size exceeds 10kW, this specific plan may not be the most effective option for your home. We'll work with you to find a more suitable energy solution if your system capacity changes.

    Solar Installation: Timeline and Expectations

System installation for a standard residential property is typically an efficient process that our partners complete in just one day. If your setup is larger or more complex, it may take between 2 to 3 days to finish.

    • Next Steps: Once the physical installation is complete, your distributor reconfigures your meter for solar, which can take up to 20 business days.
    • Safety Requirement: You must keep your solar inverter in the "off" position until your meter is fully upgraded to avoid billing errors.
    • Refer to our Solar FiT What’s Next guide for a full breakdown of the post-install process.

Solar Performance: Cloudy Days and Night Usage

Solar energy generation requires direct or indirect sunlight to function, meaning your system's output will vary based on the weather.

    • Cloudy Weather: Your panels will still produce electricity on overcast days using small amounts of available light, though at a lower capacity.
    • Night-time Power: Your solar system will not generate electricity at night; during these hours, you will automatically draw power from the electricity grid.
    • Self-Consumption Tip: To save more, try to "power up" your high-energy appliances (like dishwashers) during peak sun hours between 9am and 3pm.

    Battery Integration: Future-Proofing Your Home

Home battery storage allows you to harness excess solar energy generated during the day for use at night, further reducing your reliance on the grid.

    • Retrofitting: You can add a battery to most existing solar setups later if you aren't ready to invest today.
    • Financial Rebates: From 1 July 2025, a national solar battery rebate may reduce your installation costs by roughly 30%.
    • Virtual Power Plants (VPP): You can join a VPP to share your stored battery power with the community and earn additional bill credits.

Good to know: If you have questions about your specific solar export credits or need help registering your system, call our Customer Care team on 13 88 08 (Mon to Fri, 8am to 7pm AEST).

    ENGIE Tracker: Monitoring and Troubleshooting

ENGIE Tracker provides daily updates by combining your smart meter data with your past usage to forecast upcoming bills.

Daily Refreshes: Your usage data is refreshed every day, usually becoming available by 12pm for the previous day's activity.

Budget Management: You can set a weekly budget within the portal to receive alerts if your spending is tracking higher than expected.

Data Requirement: Because Tracker relies on digital data, you must have a smart meter installed to access these real-time insights.
