Frequently asked questions

How much money can I save with solar?

Savings depend on your energy usage, solar system size, and feed-in tariff, but most households see a significant drop in electricity bills, and many systems pay for themselves in 4 to 6 years through savings and export credits.

How will I receive my credits?

It depends on a few factors, including the size of your property and your chosen setup, but most residential solar installations take only one day to complete. Larger or more complex systems may take 2-3 days. This doesn’t include the time needed for grid connection approval, which can add 1-3 weeks depending on your distributor.

How long does a battery installation take?

A home battery installation typically takes one full day, though the exact duration can vary depending on your system size, property layout, and whether it's a new installation or added to an existing solar setup. Most standard installations are completed within 4 to 8 hours, but the timeframe may be longer if electrical upgrades are needed (like a new switchboard, meter change, or rewiring). Before installation, your provider will usually complete a site inspection or remote assessment to plan the installation and ensure everything is compliant with safety and grid requirements.

Can I get a government grant for Battey and Solar installation?

Yes, there are a number of rebates and incentives available across Australia to help lower the cost of home battery storage. Starting on 1 July 2025, the Australian government will introduce a national solar battery rebate to cut installation costs by around 30%. The rebate offers up to $372 per usable kilowatt-hour (kWh) of battery storage. You can visit your state government’s energy website for specific details.

Can I join if I've received a government grant for my battery?

In most cases, yes, you can still join a VPP even if you've received a battery rebate or grant. However, it depends on the terms of your rebate and the VPP provider’s criteria. Some programs may require that your battery remains available for community energy sharing, which aligns with most VPP models.

What is my solar FIT (Feed-in Tariff)?

Your Feed-in Tariff (FiT) is the rate your electricity retailer pays you for excess solar energy you export to the grid. In Australia, FITs vary by state and retailer. You can check your energy plan or contact your retailer to confirm your current FiT. You'll need a smart meter installed to receive a FiT.

What is the VPP?

A Virtual Power Plant (VPP) is a network of connected home solar and battery systems that work together to supply energy back to the grid when needed. By joining a VPP, your battery can automatically share stored energy during peak demand periods, which helps to stabilise the grid and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. In return, you may receive financial rewards, bill credits, or bonus payments. By joining the ENGIE VPP, you’ll get a sign-up credit of $200 in NSW, QLD, and SA, and $100 in VIC. You'll need a smart meter installed to join the VPP.
