Frequently asked questions

I already have solar, so why do I need a battery?

If you already have solar, adding a battery can significantly increase the value of your system. Solar panels generate electricity during the day, but most households use more power in the evening when the sun isn’t shining. Without a battery, any excess energy your system generates is sent back to the grid, usually for a small feed-in tariff. A battery allows you to store that excess energy and use it later, reducing your reliance on the grid and lowering your electricity bills. It’s particularly useful if you're on a time-of-use plan, helping you avoid expensive peak-hour rates.

Can I get solar, then add a battery later?

Yes, in most cases, you can add a battery to an existing solar setup. Your qualified installer can assess your system and recommend a compatible battery and inverter (if needed) to integrate smoothly with your current setup.

How long does a battery installation take?

A home battery installation typically takes one full day, though the exact duration can vary depending on your system size, property layout, and whether it's a new installation or added to an existing solar setup. Most standard installations are completed within 4 to 8 hours, but the timeframe may be longer if electrical upgrades are needed (like a new switchboard, meter change, or rewiring). Before installation, your provider will usually complete a site inspection or remote assessment to plan the installation and ensure everything is compliant with safety and grid requirements.

Can I get a government grant for battery installation?

Yes, there are a number of rebates and incentives available across Australia to help lower the cost of home battery storage. Starting on 1 July 2025, the Australian government will introduce a national solar battery rebate to cut installation costs by around 30%. The rebate offers up to $372 per usable kilowatt-hour (kWh) of battery storage. You can visit your state government’s energy website for specific details.

How long will a fully charged battery last?

The lifespan of a fully charged home battery depends on its capacity and how much electricity your household uses. Most residential batteries store between 5 to 13.5 kWh of energy. If you’re only powering essentials like lights, a fridge, and Wi-Fi, a 10 kWh battery could last around 24 to 36 hours. However, the battery may only last a few hours if you’re running high-energy appliances like heating, air conditioning, or a dishwasher. In most cases, a fully charged battery comfortably covers evening and overnight use when solar panels aren’t producing power.

How long do home batteries last?

Most home batteries come with a 10-year warranty and are designed to last around 10 to 15 years, depending on usage and conditions. Over time, their storage capacity slightly reduces, but a well-maintained battery will deliver reliable performance for many years. Your installer can advise you further.
