Understanding the Solar Sharer Offer

The Solar Sharer Offer is a regulated electricity offer that includes three hours of free electricity each day during daylight hours. It is designed to help households reduce their electricity costs by actively managing when they use their appliances, shifting more of their energy consumption into the free usage period.

From 1 July 2026, ENGIE will offer the Solar Sharer Offer to eligible households in New South Wales, South Australia and Queensland.

What does the Solar Sharer Offer include?

The price cap for this offer is set by the Australian Energy Regulator (AER). The Solar Sharer Offer includes:

  • At least three hours of free electricity each day during the day (subject to a 24kWh reasonable use cap per day - refer to the paragraph below for more information).
  • A regulated pricing structure outside the free usage period
  • Eligibility limited to households with smart meters

What is a reasonable use cap?

The reasonable use cap is a limit applied to the amount of free electricity you can use during the three-hour period included in the Solar Sharer Offer. This cap ensures the free usage period is consistent with typical household energy needs.

If your electricity usage during the Solar Sharer Offer free period stays within the reasonable use cap, there will be no cost to you for your electricity usage during the Solar Sharer Offer free period. If your usage exceeds the cap, any electricity used above the cap during the free period will be charged at ENGIE’s standard rates. The cap is applied using data from your smart meter, which records your electricity usage throughout the day. This allows usage during the free period to be measured accurately for billing purposes.

Who is eligible for the Solar Sharer Offer?

This offer is best suited to residential households that can shift electricity use into daytime hours. Business customers are not eligible to access the Solar Sharer Offer. To be eligible, you must be a residential customer, have a smart meter installed at your property, live in an eligible state (NSW, SA or QLD), and be on an ENGIE Solar Sharer plan.

Frequently asked questions

How are the free electricity hours set?

The Solar Sharer Offer includes three hours of free electricity each day during daylight hours. These hours are set as part of the regulated offer by the Australian Energy Regulator (AER). The exact timing may vary depending on your network area and will be communicated by ENGIE when you join the offer.

Can I choose when my free electricity hours apply?

No. The free usage period is fixed under the Solar Sharer Offer and cannot be changed by customers. This ensures the offer is consistent and managed within the regulated pricing structure.

What happens if I use electricity outside the free period?

Any electricity you use outside the free three-hour window will be charged at your standard rates under the Solar Sharer Offer. Your smart meter records usage throughout the day, so charges are applied accurately.

Do I need a smart meter to access the Solar Sharer Offer?

Yes. A smart meter is required to join the Solar Sharer Offer. It records your electricity usage in real time, which is necessary to apply the free usage period and ensure accurate billing.

Why is the Solar Sharer Offer not available in my state?

At launch on 1 July 2026, the Solar Sharer Offer will only be available in New South Wales, South Australia and Queensland. The Victorian Government has announced that it is launching a ‘Midday Power Saver’ on 1 October 2026, which will have a similar design to the Solar Sharer Offer.

The Australian Government has indicated it will work with other states on a potential rollout by 2027.
