What is the energy transition?
There is no shortage of debate about Australia’s energy transition. But amid the politics, acronyms and competing claims, the fundamentals can sometimes get lost.
That’s why we’re launching In Transition, a new series from ENGIE designed to demystify the changing energy system, explain the technologies behind it and challenge some of the myths that have grown up around the transition.
We’ll look at everything from batteries and renewable generation to grid stability, firming and the infrastructure required to keep electricity reliable as the system changes.

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)
Australia’s energy transition is increasingly becoming a question of flexibility.
As more renewable generation enters the system, producing electricity is only part of the challenge. We also need to be able to store energy, move it across the day and respond rapidly when conditions on the grid change.
That is why battery energy storage systems are becoming such an important part of Australia’s energy infrastructure.
Transmission
Australia's grid is the vast, connected network of wires, towers and substations that delivers electricity to our homes and businesses.
It was built for coal. Connection points were next to the coal fired power stations. Wires ran one way into the cities. Today, much of the ageing coal fleet is getting ready to be retired. Increasingly our power comes from renewable sources like wind and solar. It’s generated from projects across the country and often stored in batteries connecting to the grid at different points.
