Searching great energy plans for you
Overview
Located on the site of the former Hazelwood Power Station and Mine in Latrobe City, the Hazelwood Battery Energy Storage System (HBESS) is providing safe, secure and reliable energy to Victorians, while supporting the state in its renewable energy transition.
HBESS is a 150MW / 150MWh battery that began operations in 2023 and is located on the site of the former Hazelwood Power Station, which was the first retired coal-fired power station in Australia to host a battery storage system.
Building on HBESS, ENGIE is building a second battery energy storage system as an extension of HBESS with an additional 150MW / 600MWh of storage capacity.
This project, known as HBESS2 represents another step forward in Victoria’s energy transition and highlights the benefits of repurposing former thermal assets for renewable energy technologies.
The site has access to 1,600MW of unused transmission capacity and ample space, making Hazelwood the perfect location for storage projects.

The Current Development
The Hazelwood Battery Energy Storage System (HBESS) is an existing 150MW / 150MWh utility-scale battery that has been operational since 2023.
It has the capacity to store the energy equivalent of an hour of energy generation from the rooftop solar systems of 30,000 Victorian homes, playing a critical role in increasing the state’s energy capacity and delivering further grid stability.
HBESS forms part of ENGIE’s commitment to repurposing the former Hazelwood Power Station and Mine, which ENGIE has been rehabilitating since 2017. The battery’s innovative design and unique location means that it can quickly and cost-effectively respond to network and market demand. The battery participates in frequency control ancillary service markets to deliver critical stability to the grid that is increasingly comprised of variable renewable sources.
Key features:
- HBESS provides grid stability and peak power, meaning the battery can provide electricity into the grid in times of peak demand, or store electricity that is not being used in times of low demand.
- The battery was built by Fluence who are maintaining the HBESS over a 20-year period. The battery uses Fluence’s Gridstack technology, including 342 modular Fluence Cubes - providing industry-leading reliability and safety.
- The battery has an expected lifespan of 20 years.
The Development
HBESS2 is a 150MW / 600MWh utility-scale battery energy storage system that will deliver additional dispatchable capacity and grid stability for Victoria. The extension will include battery storage units, inverters and transformers (low voltage and high voltage), a site substation, an operations facility, site parking, personnel facilities and a construction compound to support site activities.
Community benefits
ENGIE is committed to helping build the workforce of the future.
By working with local communities, we aim to identify opportunities that build local skills, support pathways into employment and enable more people to participate in the region’s growing energy sector.
Our approach is focused on creating lasting local benefits, helping to develop skills and capability that can support employment opportunities now and into the future.
Powering her Pathway
ENGIE is proud to partner with Tradeswomen Australia and TAFE Gippsland to deliver the Powering Her Pathway program, supporting more women in Gippsland to pursue careers in the clean energy sector.
Through tailored vocational training, practical support and pathways to employment, the program helps participants build the skills, confidence and experience needed to take the next step into a clean energy career.
HBESS and HBESS2 play an important role in creating these pathways, helping connect local skills development with employment opportunities and contributing to a stronger, more diverse workforce for Gippsland’s energy future.
