Concessions and government energy discounts

Energy concessions, rebates and grants are available through state government programs to help you with your energy bills. To learn more about the eligibility criteria and how to apply, click on your state below.

The New South Wales Government provides a number of rebates to help reduce your energy bills. These rebates are available to:

  • Concession card holders.
  • Life support customers.
  • When emergency assistance is needed.

You may be eligible to claim more than one type of rebate.

Low Income Household Rebate  

Who is it for?

New South Wales residents who hold a government issued concession card. 

What is it?

A rebate of up to approximately $350 (exc. GST) per year.

If you are eligible for the Low Income Household Rebate, and have gas supplied to the same address, you will also receive the Gas Rebate.

Gas Rebate  

Who is it for?

New South Wales residents who hold a government issued concession card. 

What is it?

A rebate of up to $110 (exc. GST) per year. 

If you are eligible for the Gas Rebate, and have electricity supplied to the same address, you will also receive the Low Income Household Rebate.

Family Energy Rebate  

Who is it for?

Households who have dependent children and are eligible for Family Tax Benefit A or B. 

What is it?

Up to approximately $250 (excl GST) per retail household, per financial year.

Seniors Energy Rebate

Who is it for?

Independent retirees who hold a valid Commonwealth Seniors Health Card.

What is it?

$250 (excl GST) per household, per financial year.

Medical Energy Rebate  

Who is it for?

People who have an inability to self-regulate their body temperature due to a medical condition. 

What is it?

Up to approximately $350 (excl GST) per year.

Life Support Rebate  

Who is it for?

People who are required to use approved energy-intensive medical equipment at home. This rebate is not means tested and depends on the type of machine in use, and in some cases, the frequency of the use. 

What is it?

The rebate amount depends on the type of machine in use, and in some cases, the frequency of the use. 

How to apply

Download the Life Support Rebate Application Form.  You’ll need to include details of your doctor or medical practitioner on the form.

Energy Accounts Payments Assistance (EAPA) Vouchers 

Who is it for?

People experiencing a short-term financial crisis or emergency and need support to pay their energy bills.

What is it?

Vouchers are issued by community welfare organisations such as St Vincent de Paul, the Salvation Army and Anglicare. 

How to apply

Apply online through Service NSW.

You will need a MyServiceNSW Account, proof of ID and a copy of your bill when filling in the application. 

 

Energy Bill Relief Fund 2024-25

The Energy Bill Relief scheme has been extended to the 2024-25 financial year and all Australian households and eligible small business customers will automatically receive the rebates on their electricity bills. 

As a customer, you do not need to apply for the rebates. 

One rebate will be applied to electricity bills of all households and all eligible small businesses.  

Residential 

All residential households with an active electricity account on the effective dates shown below. 

Occupant accounts are eligible to receive these rebates. 

Rebates will be applied on a per-customer basis. That is, if you have multiple electricity accounts will only receive one credit each quarter. 

The Australian Government Energy Price Relief Plan Rebate will be applied in quarterly instalments of $75 over the course of 2024-25, on: 

  • 31-Jul-2024 
  • 1-Oct-2024 
  • 1-Jan-2025 
  • 1-Apr-2025 

Over the course of the financial year, the total rebate amount will be $300. 

 

Small Business 

All eligible small business customers that have an active electricity account on the effective dates shown below. 

For your business to be eligible, the total electricity consumption for your business must be: 

  • In SA, less than 160MWh per annum; 
  • In Vic, less than 40MWh per annum; 
  • In NSW, less than 100MWh per annum; and 
  • In ACT, less than 100MWh per annum. 

The rebates will be applied on a per-customer basis. Therefore, if you are a small business customer that has multiple sites, you will only receive one credit each quarter, provided the total consumption across all sites is less than the consumption thresholds listed above. 

If you are a sole trader that is operating a business from home and your consumption is separately metered on a small business tariff, you will be eligible for the small business rebates. 

Occupant accounts are eligible to receive these rebates.

Victoria

The information provided below is current as at July 2023 and is subject to legislative change.

If you hold one of these Victorian concession cards, you can apply online for a concession discount:

  • Pensioner concession card
  • Health Care Card (issued by Centrelink)
  • Department of Veterans’ Affairs Gold Card.

To apply for a concession discount, you must be a primary or joint ENGIE account holder. You will need to provide your ENGIE customer number and the details on your concession card when you apply online.

While you are a ENGIE customer, we’ll automatically apply the concessions for as long as you are eligible. You can contact us to withdraw your consent at any time, but if you do, we’ll be unable to provide your discounts or concessions. 

The Victorian Government concessions you may be eligible for include:

 

Annual Electricity Concession

Who is it for?

Victorian residents who hold an eligible concession card. 

What is it?

17.5% of electricity usage and service costs.

Winter Gas Concession

Who is it for?

Gas account holders with an eligible concession card. The concession is available over the winter period of 1 May to 31 October each year. 

What is it?

17.5% of gas usage and service costs.

Service to Property Concession  

Who is it for?

People with very low electricity usage. 

What is it?

If the electricity use on a bill is lower than the service charge, the service charge is reduced to the cost of the electricity used.

This concession ended on 30 November 2023.

 

Controlled Load Electricity Concession  

Who is it for?

Eligible households with a separately metered electric hot water service or slab heating, known as a controlled load or dedicated circuit tariff. 

What is it?

A discount of 13% on controlled load electricity bills. 

This concession ended on 30 November 2023.

 

Re-energisation (Transfer) Fee Waiver  

Who is it for?

Eligible concession card holders who are organising standard connection of electricity to a property.

What is it?

The electricity connection application fee will be waived. 

This concession ended on 30 November 2023.

 

Life Support Concession  

Who is it for?

If you or someone in your household uses a life support machine, or any other type of machine prescribed by a doctor for life support purposes, contact ENGIE on 13 88 08 so that we can ensure that these details are recorded on your energy account. 

You may be eligible for the Life Support Concession if you have one of the following machines: 

  • Oxygen concentrators
  • Intermittent peritoneal dialysis machine
  • Haemodialysis machine

What is it?

A discount equal to the cost of 1,880 kilowatt hours of electricity used per year, or 470 kilowatt hours used per quarter.

Medical Cooling Concession  

Who is it for?

You may be eligible if you or someone in your household suffers from multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, fibromyalgia or motor neuron disease.

What is it?

Discount: 17.5% discount on electricity costs from 1 November to 30 April each year.

Excess Energy Concession  

Who is it for?

Available if you have electricity or gas bills that exceed the yearly trigger level of use for the Annual Electricity Concession or the Winter Gas Concession.

What is it?

A discount of 17.5% of electricity usage and service costs. 

How to apply

If you are eligible, ENGIE will send an application form once the trigger level has been reached. 

Please note: if you receive the Life Support Concession or the Medical Cooling Concession, you will automatically receive this concession. 

 

Utility Relief Grant Scheme  

Who is it for?

If you are an eligible concession card holder (or part of a low-income household) and you’re having temporary difficulties paying your energy bills, you may be eligible for this grant.  

What is it?

Grant amount: a maximum of $650 on each utility type in a two-year period (or $1,300 for households with a single source of energy (e.g. electricity only).

The $250 Power Saving Bonus

Who is it for?
The Victorian Government’s Power Saving Bonus was a one-off payment to help you with your energy bill. 

What is it?

A one-off $250 payment. 

How to apply?

The fourth round of the program ran from 24 March 2023 to 31 August 2023. New applications will not be accepted after this date. For more information, visit Victorian Energy Compare.

The Energy Bill Relief scheme has been extended to the 2024-25 financial year and all Australian households and eligible small business customers will automatically receive the rebates on their electricity bills. 

As a customer, you do not need to apply for the rebates. 

One rebate will be applied to electricity bills of all households and all eligible small businesses.

Occupant accounts are eligible to receive these rebates. 

Rebates will be applied on a per-customer basis. That is, if you have multiple electricity accounts will only receive one credit each quarter.

  • In Vic, less than 40MWh per annum; 
  • In NSW, less than 100MWh per annum; and 
  • In ACT, less than 100MWh per annum. 

The rebates will be applied on a per-customer basis. Therefore, if you are a small business customer that has multiple sites, you will only receive one credit each quarter, provided the total consumption across all sites is less than the consumption thresholds listed above. 

If you are a sole trader that is operating a business from home and your consumption is separately metered on a small business tariff, you will be eligible for the small business rebates.

Energy Bill Concession

Who is it for?

If you’re on a low or fixed income, you may be eligible to receive the energy bill concession to help you cover the cost of your electricity bills. 

What is it?

Up to $274.85 per year, with the daily rate being $0.753 (GST exclusive) (amount correct for 2024/2025 – reviewed each financial year)

Medical Heating or Cooling Concession

Who is it for?

If you’re on a low or fixed income and have a medical condition that makes it difficult to regulate your temperature, you could be eligible for the South Australian Government’s Medical Heating or Cooling Concession. 

What is it?

Up to $274.85 per year (amount correct for 2024/2025 – reviewed each financial year)

Emergency Electricity Payment Scheme (EEPS)

Who is it for?

Eligible low-income households at risk of having their electricity disconnected.

What is it?

Up to $800. Available once every 2 years, paid as a credit directly onto the electricity account.

Electricity and Gas Rebates

Who is it for?

Pensioners and seniors may be eligible for these rebates.  

What is it?

Electricity Rebate: $372.20 per Year (GST inclusive)

Reticulated Natural Gas Rebate: $86.75 per year (GST inclusive)

Electricity Life Support

Who is it for?

Eligible customers who are seriously ill and use a home-based oxygen concentrator or kidney dialysis machine.  

In addition to requiring a life support machine, you will need one of the following Queensland Government-issued concession cards or allowances:

  • Pensioner Concession Card 
  • Health Care Card
  • Health Care Interim Voucher 
  • Child disability allowance 
  • Queensland Seniors Card.

What is it?

If you are eligible for the concession, you will receive a payment of:

  • $975.60 per year for each oxygen concentrator, or
  • $653.34 per year for each kidney dialysis machine you use.

The concession is calculated monthly and paid quarterly into your nominated bank account.

Medical Cooling and Heating Electricity Concession Scheme  

Who is it for?

The scheme helps with electricity costs for those experiencing chronic medical conditions that can be aggravated by changes in temperature, such as: 

  • Multiple sclerosis 
  • Autonomic system dysfunction 
  • Significant burns
  • Severe inflammatory skin conditions.

What is it?

A rebate of $479.03 (including GST) per year.

Home Energy Emergency Assistance Scheme (HEEAS)  

Who is it for?

The HEEAS helps those unable to pay for their mains electricity or gas bills when experiencing short-term financial difficulty or an unforeseen emergency. 

What is it?

A one-off emergency payment of up to $720, once every two years.

The Energy Bill Relief scheme has been extended to the 2024-25 financial year and all Australian households and eligible small business customers will automatically receive the rebates on their electricity bills. 

As a customer, you do not need to apply for the rebates. 

Two rebates will be applied to your electricity bills. These credits will be applied to your account on the dates indicated below, providing you have an active electricity account on the date.  

The credit(s) will appear on your next electricity bill. 

Residential 

All residential Queensland households with an active, named* electricity account on the effective dates shown below. 

* Occupant accounts are not eligible to receive these rebates. 

The Queensland Government Cost of Living Rebate will be applied as a single lump sum credit of $1000 on 1-Jul-2024. 

The Australian Government Energy Price Relief Plan Rebate will be applied in quarterly instalments of $75 over the course of 2024-25, on: 

  • 1-Jul-2024 
  • 1-Oct-2024 
  • 1-Jan-2025 
  • 1-Apr-2025 

Over the course of the financial year, the total rebate amount will be $300. 

 

Small Business 

All eligible Qld small business customers that have an active, named* electricity account on the effective dates shown in this table. 

For your business to be eligible, the total electricity consumption for your business must be less than 100MWh per annum. 

The rebates will be applied on a per-customer basis. Therefore, if you are a small business customer that has multiple sites, you will receive one Queensland Government Energy Price Relief Plan Rebate and one Queensland Government Small Business Rebate, provided the total electricity consumption across all your sites is less than 100MWh per annum. If you are a sole trader that is operating a business from home, and your consumption is separately metered on a small business tariff, you will be eligible for the small business rebates.

The Queensland Government Small Business Rebate will be applied as a single lump sum credit of $325 on 1-Jul-2024. 

The Australian Government Energy Price Relief Plan Rebate will be applied in quarterly instalments of $81.25 over the course of 2024-25, on:

  • 1-Oct-2024 
  • 1-Jan-2025

Hardship Utilities Grant Scheme (HUGS)

Who is it for?

HUGS provides financial assistance if you are experiencing financial difficulties or are unable to pay your utility bill.

What is it?

If you live south of the 26th parallel (south of Denham), you may be eligible for up to $640 per financial year.

If you live north of the 26th parallel (north of and including Denham), you may be eligible for up to $1,060 per financial year.

Energy Bill Relief Fund 2024-25

As the rebates are for electricity bills, they are not applicable to our Western Australian customers.

Utilities Concession  

Who is it for?

You may be eligible for this concession if you have:

  • Centrelink Low Income Health Care Concession Card (HCC)
  • Centrelink Pensioner Concession Card (PCC)
  • Veteran Affairs Pensioner Concession Card or Gold Card. 

What is it?

The annual concession amount for 1 July 2023 – 30 June 2024 is $750.

Life Support Rebate  

Who is it for?

If you or someone in your household requires a life support machine, you may be eligible for financial support to help you pay for the electricity used to run the machine. 

What is it?

The annual rebate amount for 2023-2024 is $128.

How to apply
