State of Origin bushfire relief match gets a free kick from Simply Energy

Simply Energy will donate the cost of gas and electricity consumed at this month’s AFL State of Origin match, adding to the companies’ wider bushfire relief efforts, and adding another win to its long-standing relationship with Marvel Stadium.

Simply Energy Chief Executive Shannon Hyde said powering a world-class facility capable of holding more than 56,000 guests involves more than flicking a switch.

“Because Simply Energy has been powering Marvel Stadium for three years, we now work together to understand, predict, and manage the substantial energy load that goes along with hosting large events at the precinct,” he said.

“It’s because of our close relationship and knowledge of Marvel Stadium’s energy requirements, that we can make this small gesture, and do our part to make the State of Origin match a success.”

Simply Energy anticipates the AFL State of Origin doubleheader matches will represent an approximate energy usage volume of almost 70,000 KWh - equivalent to supplying 10 residential households for 12 months.

Simply Energy’s donation of free power for the State of Origin match is in addition to its support of customers affected by the bushfires, and wider relief efforts by the retailer’s parent company, ENGIE Australia and New Zealand, including a donation to the Gippsland Emergency Relief Fund.

“This year’s bushfires have affected not only Simply Energy customers, but also our people who live and work in those communities. We’ve all seen the devastating impact of these fires, but equally we’ve witnessed the generosity and ingenuity of companies, community groups and people who want to help,” said Mr Hyde. AFL General Manager of Commercial Kylie Rogers thanked Simply Energy for their support of the AFL State of Origin Bushfire Relief double header match.

“People from across the country and around the world have been deeply saddened by the devastation experienced in the recent bushfires, so it’s wonderful to be able to work with organisations like Simply Energy to come together and support those who have been impacted,” Ms Rogers said.

“It’s through contributions such as this which make events like this possible, so we thank Simply Energy for its support of the Bushfire Relief double header match in what is shaping up to be a memorable event.”

The AFL, with support from the Clubs and AFLPA, will host a State of Origin match on February 28 at Marvel Stadium with all money raised to further support the community.
