Greater Springfield

ENGIE is building a Better City that will produce more energy than it consumes

Our Vision

ENGIE and Springfield City Group have formed a historic 50-year strategic alliance that will make Greater Springfield in South East Queensland a Zero Net Energy city.

The vision for Greater Springfield is that by 2038, the six suburbs that make up the Greater Springfield community will generate more energy than they consume.

To achieve this, ENGIE is helping Springfield City Group achieve their vision, with solutions in:

  • renewable energy generation
  • district energy schemes
  • green mobility solutions
  • digital technology
  • a dedicated research and innovation centre
  • renewable energy storage infrastructure
  • energy efficiency initiatives

By 2038 Greater Springfield will produce more energy than it uses, and serve as a successful model for resilient, efficient and connected communities worldwide.

We’re investing in the future, with Better Cities today.

We have one chance—and the responsibility—to get this right and be an ongoing example for others to follow. The focus on efficient and sustainable energy production, storage, and integration with the community has never been more important for Australia and for us. I’m confident that ENGIE can assist us to be a world leader in innovative and smart city solutions.

Why does the world need better cities?

Most people think that wind farms and solar arrays are at the centre of our global energy transition, and while partly true, it’s mostly happening in cities.

Cities haven’t evolved much over time, but as they grow in density worldwide we can’t afford to have wasteful economies.

By 2050, 70% of the world’s population will be living in cities, so it’s critical that we transition our urban areas to clean energy. Or better still, design them that way from the start.

It’s a tricky balancing act…the population is growing and modern society relies on energy to fuel their way of life. So how do we manage the need for energy with the need to protect the environment?

We call it harmonious progress.

We’re driving changes to systems, infrastructure and attitudes to achieve the benefits that enhance quality of life while making cities sustainable for future generations.

Our Greater Springfield project is one such example – we’ll build renewable generation capacity and help manage the way that energy is used, to produce less waste, at lower cost and with fewer emissions.
