Solar panels, battery storage and our Virtual Power Plant (VPP)

With an ENGIE VPP you could maximise the benefits and affordability of your solar panels and battery.

Vpp Credits

*Join our VPP to maximise the benefits of your solar and battery system. Customers in NSW, QLD and SA will receive a $200 sign-up credit and approximately $20 in monthly bill credits. Customers in Victoria will receive a $100 sign-up credit and approximately $15 in monthly bill credits.

The longer you stay, the more bill credits you receive! Plus, receive a solar Feed-in Tariff to help make the most out of your solar exports.

Batteries we support on ENGIE VPP

To join our ENGIE VPP offer, you'll need a compatible battery and inverter already installed.

What is a Virtual Power Plant?

Virtual Power Plant (VPP) is a network of connected home solar and battery systems that together support the electricity grid.

View our video to discover more on how our VPP can work for you.

Verify your eligibility for ENGIE VPP

Complete the form below to find out if your battery and inverter is compatible with our VPP and to view our ENGIE VPP offer. If you're not sure where to start or don't have a battery, visit our smart energy hub to find out more.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What are the benefits of joining a Virtual Power Plant?

Store excess energy

When your solar system generates more than you can use, your battery stores this excess energy for you to use in the evening when the sun goes down.

Share excess energy with your community

When the grid is under stress, the Virtual Power Plant will share excess energy with your local community. Don’t worry, you’ll always benefit from annual VPP credits to your account, and you won’t have your supply interrupted due to your participation in the VPP as our priority is to always ensure you always have enough stored energy in your battery to meet your needs.

Support the grid

Battery storage and VPPs do more than simply earn bill credits. These smarter, more sustainable energy solutions mean you’ll also be helping take care of your community and environment by supporting the grid.

How will I receive my credits?

Once your battery is enrolled to ENGIE VPP you will receive your upfront credit applied to your next electricity bill, plus the monthly VPP bill credits will also be applied to your bills. This is an ongoing contract, the longer you stay, the more bill credits you receive!

Do I need to have the battery installed when I sign up for the VPP?

Yes, your battery needs to be installed, operating and connected to internet before you can join ENGIE VPP. You will need to provide us with the following information during the process of signing up:

  1. Whether you have a single phase or a three-phase connection
  2. The number of batteries installed, the brand(s), model(s), their individual and total capacity, and their installation date(s)
  3. Inverter brand, model, and capacity
  4. Solar system capacity and inverter brand
  5. A photo of the serial number label (for non-Tesla batteries only) – please ensure the serial number is clear and easily readable
  6. Tesla app GWID screenshot (Tesla equipment only).

Why do you use my battery?

We use your battery to support the electricity grid when power demand is high:

Wholesale Energy Market Support

In Australia, wholesale energy prices are set every 5 minutes based on the energy supply available and current demand across the grid. In some rare cases, when there is exceptionally high energy demand (for example, during a summer heat wave) or a sudden reduction in supply (for example, if a power station breaks down), wholesale energy prices can spike to very high levels. By exporting the excess renewable energy stored in your battery at these times, we can support the electricity demand and create extra value from the wholesale energy market.
You will receive monthly VPP bill credits in consideration of the payments we receive for this support.

Ancillary Services Support

A side effect of an imbalance between the energy supply and energy demand is a change in the frequency of the electricity on the grid. Significant frequency variations from the standard 50Hz can lead to issues across the grid. The grid operator has established markets to provide ancillary services to stabilise the grid's frequency in times of need. These markets are called Frequency Control Ancillary Services (FCAS) markets. Your battery can help provide these ancillary services by responding to grid frequency deviations and briefly charging or discharging power. In doing so, it also generates payments from these FCAS markets.

How much energy would ENGIE either discharge or charge from my battery per year?

During any 12-month period within the VPP (Virtual Power Plant) Benefit Period, ENGIE may charge, discharge, or hold energy in your battery. However, there are limits to how much we can do this, based on the size of your battery and the terms of your Agreement. For those that sign up after 1 July 2025:

  • If your battery system power capability is between 5kW and 9.99kW:
We may charge and discharge up to 400kWh each over a rolling 12-month period.
  • If your battery system power capability is between 10kW and 15kW:
We may charge and discharge up to 800kWh each over a rolling 12-month period.

These limits help ensure your battery usage remains balanced while still allowing you to benefit from participating in the VPP.
