Searching great energy plans for you
Your premium feed-in tariff is ending - what now?
What the end of the Solar PFiT scheme means for you

If you’re in Victoria and signed up for the government’s Solar Premium Feed-in Tariff (PFiT) scheme, you might be wondering what the end of this program means for you. You could also be surprised to find there are some new opportunities on the horizon.
Let’s break it down.
A quick overview of the PFiT Scheme.
The Solar PFiT scheme began in late 2009 to encourage the use of renewable energy, allowing homeowners in Victoria with rooftop solar to earn 60c/kWh for the solar power they feed back into the grid. This has provided significant financial benefits for many households.
However, as the scheme ends on 1 November 2024, it’s important to understand how this will impact your solar setup and what options and opportunities you now have.
Why is the scheme ending?
The PFiT scheme was designed to support early solar adopters for 15 years. With increased solar generation and falling wholesale electricity prices, the Victorian government has decided that it’s time to transition to new structures that reflect these changes.
But not to worry, we’re here to help you make the most of your solar journey!
What does the end of the PFiT scheme mean for you?
Time to consider upgrading.
If you’ve been hesitant to upgrade your solar system because of the PFiT scheme, you might have an old solar system on your hands now, and you might be interested in increasing the size of your system. The Vic PFiT scheme was only available to customers with systems 3 kW or less, but after 1 November 2024 you won’t’ have to worry about losing your PFiT if you upgrade to a larger system. This means you can generate more power and maximise your investment.
Changes in feed-in tariff rates.
After the PFiT scheme ends, your rate will change. The 60c/kWh PFiT you’ve been receiving will be replaced with a new feed-in tariff. While the minimum FiT rate set by the Essential Services Commission is 3.3 c/kWh, your new rate will depend on your energy provider.
Battery storage options.
Now is a good time to think about adding battery storage to your new system. With battery storage, you can save the excess energy your panels generate during the day and use it when you need it most - especially during peak hours or at night. This is a great way to maximise your solar investment.
